He didn't just have Homestuck fan expectations bogging him down, he had the expectations of Homestuck fans who gave him a LOT of money expecting a game to come out. I truly believe that Hussie, realizing he had written himself into a corner that would take AGES to get out of pre-Game Over, felt this was the best course of action to get it over with so he could focus on ensuring Hiveswap released at a reasonable time. It was ALSO after Hiveswap began development that the infamous "Retcon" happened, where Hussie completely changed the entirety of Act 6, revived Vriska, and then rushed to the finish line. However, during this entire rocky cycle of development, Homestuck the comic was still on-going, and also going through very lengthy, very regular Hiatuses due to Hussie being pre-occupied. How was he supposed to know things would end up this way? Keep in mind I don't necessarily blame Hussie for this. The recurring theme of this is Hussie just completely underestimated how much would work go into this. Then they started working on it, and then also had to completely start over when they realize what they were making would take too long. When that fell through, Hussie then had to scramble together a game development studio from (Doc) scratch. Hussie originally intended to just hand it off to a well known studio The Odd Gentlemen and have them make it for him. We all know that Hiveswap had an extremely rocky development cycle. Hussie was ill-equipped and also unaware of the magnitude of work that goes into game development (Which he himself confirmed later).ĭuring this time Hussie was also juggling Homestuck proper which was still ongoing, and which he was still working on almost daily. He had no idea if it would do well, no real concepts to show (Trailer was entirely composed of HS footage), and no team planned to make it. I don't know how many of you remember, but the Hiveswap Kickstarter, or as it was known back then as the "Homestuck Game Kickstarter" was very much a "whim" on the part of Hussie. It's great.īut this isn't about the "game" itself but the concept of it and what went into making it. I think Hiveswap is a truly charming game and a welcome addition to the HS universe. I don't mean this as a dig at Hiveswap itself. Please keep spoilers out of the title when you post. New to all this? => New Reader's Guide to Homestuck The largest, most active community for Homestuck and the works of Andrew Hussie. We've got a team assembled from all around the Homestuck/Hiveswap community, including folks who've worked on the official games in various capacities.Views: normal | no humor | discussion only | no spoilers The game will be a visual novel similar to Friendsim or Pesterquest, but designed to provide a more coherent narrative experience throughout as MSPAR tries to balance convincing their old friends to leave Alternia for the locked timeline they created in Pesterquest with trying to aid the growing Alternian rebellion. The game follows MSPA Reader as they return to Friendsim-era Alternia to try to pick up all the friends they left behind, only to discover that things are very much not as they seem. We're going to be releasing our first volume on April 13th, 2022 and plan to release one volume a month until we're done after that! Now that we've dropped a gameplay trailer, I figured I'd post about this! For the past 10 months, I've begun working with a team of around 40 artists and 35 voice actors on an unofficial sequel to Hiveswap: Friendsim and Pesterquest.
